Attention: Not all hotels available through our affiliate partners allow everyone 18 and older to check-in. We recommend that you only use the hotels directly listed on our website.
If you’re 18, 19, or 20 years old you may have met problems when looking for a hotel. It’s true that many hotels refuse to rent to customers under 21 but there are plenty across the U.S. and Canada that rent to customers 18 and older. We believe that all adults should be able to access hotels and rental cars and we have created lists of providers.
And as always, we charge our users nothing for this site and ask for no donations. However, you can support our mission by booking through our affiliate links so we can expand our coverage and stay ad-free. If you’re a fan of youthSociable, we would appreciate you liking us on Facebook.
Why do hotels have check-in age requirements?
The reasons vary by hotel but they can include:
- Reduced insurance premiums or perceived risk of damage since young people are often stereotyped as irresponsible
- The presence of in-room minibars with alcoholic beverages
- General stereotyping of young people
What are the age requirements?
The most common minimum check-in ages are 18 and 21. But just because you’re over 21 doesn’t mean every hotel will provide you equal service. A check-in age of 25, while less common, isn’t rare among hotels.
Are they enforced?
There are reports about certain hotels claiming they do not enforce their check-in age requirements. However, we do not recommend traveling on the assumption that a hotel will not enforce its check-in age since the person working the check-in counter may have simply forgotten that one time. It’s better to avoid this situation altogether and just book a hotel that actually wants your business.
