Hotel Quality Vs. Check-in Age

One of the biggest myths about trying to rent a hotel room when you’re under 21 is that only run-down establishments set their check-in ages at 18. As we built our website surveying hundreds of cities across the USA and Canada we found this to be far from the truth.

Of course some hotels that rent to people under 21 are run-down but there is no shortage of run-down hotels overall. Somewhat surprisingly many hotels that get poor reviews or appear to be of lower quality set their check-in ages at 21 (or even 25) while nearby higher-end hotels rent to travelers 18 and older.

In fact, there are many cases where the high-end hotels are the ONLY ones in the area that rent to customers 18 and older. Overall, we found little nationwide correlation between hotel price point and their check-in age: however, plenty of cities are outliers from the broader analysis.

So what does this mean for you? It means you shouldn’t fear only being able to stay at low quality establishments. At the same time, don’t assume the check-in age is under 21 just because the establishment is low-end.

Fortunately many high-end hotels significantly discount their rooms, especially when they know it will be difficult to fill them. If you are 18, 19, or 20 years of age and looking to rent a room begin your search on our website today!
